¿Playa o montaña?

Posted by Alvaro

In a rainy day, Stefanía (Ecuador) and Daniel (Venezuela) –the two characters of this story- start planning their next vacations. Daniel wants to go to the mountain to see wild life, breathe pure air and do some activities such as trekking or climbing. Stefanía, on the other hand, is looking forward to sunbathing on the beach. After listening to each other’s reasons, they both change their minds and it seems impossible to reach an agreement. This is the plot of “¿Playa o montaña?,” a fun 7-minute video with optional subtitles in Spanish that includes two audio activities and an 8-page PDF booklet.

“¿Playa o Montaña?” is an excellent resource for teachers with pre-intermediate classes that need to cover the following grammar and vocabulary:

  • The vocabulary of the video and activities is about vacations. It can be seen as the second part of “¿Adónde vas de vacaciones?,” an icebreaker about tourism in cities. In “¿Playa o montaña?” the vocabulary is about tourism in mountains and the coast, with key words such as actividades, aire puro, animal, árbol, arena, balcón, bosque, castillo, descansar, disfrutar, elegir, escalar, esquiar, isla, jaula, mar, monumento, montaña, mosquito, museo, naturaleza, ola, paisaje, pájaro, parque nacional, playa, recuerdos, tomar el sol, vistas and zoológico. In addition to this, there are many adjectives used to describe places, such as barato, caro, cómodo, fresco, helado, impresionante, inolvidable, interesante, interminable and peligroso.

  • The grammar focuses on the verb “decir”, one of the most common in Spanish. There are many examples of useful expressions that include this verb, such as “cómo se dice…”,  “decir la verdad”, “decir que…”, “¡qué dices!”, “¿qué dices?” and “yo no digo nada…”.This icebreaker can also be used as a great introduction of indirect object pronouns, a topic we covered in “Mi mejor amiga” icebreaker.

The activities included in the package will help your students understand the gist of the video. And thanks to the subtitles, they’ll be able to get every detail. Watch the full video in low resolution in the icebreaker section, and contact us if you have any question about “¿Playa o montaña?”
