An extract from a video featuring 4 famous Hispanic soccer players: Leo Messi, Maradona, Andrés Iniesta and Alfredo Di Stéfano

What do you talk about with your students?

Once that we get to know them, and we ask them about their names, likes, favorite colors and so on, most of the spontaneous and real conversations will be about things they did.

We may ask them how their weekend was.

How they celebrated their birthday.

If they liked the movie they went to see at the movie theatre.

In all those conversations we'll be using the past tense.

It's an extremely important tense, so we've decided to do a series of fun lessons to help you teach it and/or review it.

The series is called El personaje misterioso.

1 Get ready for a fun game

In El personaje misterioso 1: El pretérito de loss verbos -ar students will be playing a game to guess a famous soccer player.

We'll start the lesson by presenting some of the most succesful Hispanic players in different sports.

And also the 4 candidates for our game: Andrés Iniesta, Alfredo Di Stéfano, Diego Armando Maradona and Leo Messi.

Students will learn some soccer key vocabulary and they'll practice the preterite of regular -ar verbs.

Then they'll be ready to watch the video and guess who the mystery person is.

Keep playing!

The lesson doesn't end when students guess who the mystery person is.

They'll use the video as a model to create their own personajes misteriosos.

The provided template will give them the vocabulary and grammar structures they need.

They will then do some research to choose a mystery person and 3 candidates, and they'll present their own game to the rest of the class.

It'll be a great way to start or finish many upcoming lessons, so your students keep practicing daily this important tense.
